I received this great mail art from Alan.
This 78p stamp was issued in 2008, one of six stamps under the title Mayday - Rescue at Sea. This one celebrates the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, and features an all-weather lifeboat being launched in Tenby, Pembrokeshire. RNLI is a charity organization, and its volunteer lifeboat crews work with HM Coastguard in providing 24 hour search and rescue service around the British and Irish coasts.
It also looks like Royal Mail was experimenting with a different style of perforation along the long edges of the stamp - update, see Bob's comment below for the meaning of the perforations.
To see the other selections showing people at work, visit Sunday Stamps.
Alan included a fantastic piece of art on the inside:
The perforations form the three dots and dashes that spell out SOS in Morse Code.
ReplyDeleteWow, thanks for that information - subtle and clever addition to the stamp.
DeleteAnd a very clever take on May Day 'mayday'!
ReplyDeleteYou and Bob are clearly way sharper than me today!
DeleteWow, beautiful stamp!!!
ReplyDelete(and a funny poetic addition to the envelope, to choose between yes, no and muesli :-) )
I love it when I can combine mail art with Sunday Stamps. And I thought the addition was clever, and subtle, and funny.
DeleteYes the ultimate Mayday envelope. Always looks spectacular when they go into the water although hopefully not for something too bad.
ReplyDeleteOh, how I wish I had put the two concepts together - it would have made me look so smart!
