Toni's Tiny Banana Mail

Toni said she fought with the post office clerk to get this one mailed.

I think it technically is smaller than the limits allowed by the post office - it measures 4.25 x 3.75 in (11 x 9.5 cm).

My understanding is that it probably should have been mailed as a package (somewhere in the region of $3.50), but Toni managed to persuade the person that it was just non-machinable (+21c) instead.

Brava!

  1. Lovely card and I am surprised that it first wasn't accepted so easily (here in NL minimum size officially is 9x14 cm). Brave Toni and nice story!

I always thought USPS accepts and will deliver too small mail also without extra charge, if you add stamps, don't add your own address, and put it into the public mailbox? (I learned from the IUOMA group 'odd shaped postcards', and I tried it for tiny mail from NL to US a.o. and it worked :-) )

    1. I think that technically if mail is 'too small' it is supposed to go as a package! Smallest acceptable dimensions are 5 x 3.5 inches. However, there is also an 'aspect ratio' element that the post office clerks measure; I assume that is something the machines need. The closer it gets to a square, or a skinny rectangle, the more likely you are to have to pay extra.

However, like you, I often just mail things and, for the most part, the post office does a great job getting things delivered. I am lucky that I can weigh my mail at the self serve kiosk to see how much postage is needed.
