The whole envelope looks great with the 25 1c stamps, but the main feature is the one celebrating Jurgis Mačiūnas (anglicized to George Maciunas), one of the founders of the Fluxus art movement.
There are various fonts on the stamp itself, as well as on the selvage. Here's the full sheet - even the layout of the stamps is quirky.
For more interesting fonts on postage, check out the links at Sunday Stamps.
And some really great things were inside the envelope, too, including a very clever approach to make artistamps by incorporating selvage from a real stamp sheet.
Mindaugas also included these great postmarks - I love the one with the mouse.
I was flummoxed by fluxus...
ReplyDeletebut wiki says it [was] "the most radical and experimental art movement of the sixties".
The mouse is cute on the cancel - I wonder if there is a special significance?. Did you also notice the cat below?
The cat is clever too, isn't it? The mouse postmark is for the new stamps issued April 8 of two rodents on stamps - the northern birch mouse, and the garden dormouse.
DeleteThe perfect stamp for this week, love it. Indeed the whole package is a treat.
ReplyDeleteI am often amazed at how generous fellow mail artists are - I would never have imagined receiving such a cool package.
DeleteHi Phillip - I had no idea about George Maciunas ... and how sad he died so young - he was obviously highly respected: I still haven't a clue what's going on - but now I have a link to his Wiki entry - I'll keep an eye open and try and learn more. I also see there's a link to Robert Moses - years ago I did read a biography on him ... but never got it returned when I leant it out!
ReplyDeleteInteresting - you are introducing me to something completely new - cheers Hilary
If it helps, I don't fully understand it, either :)
DeleteA real - official - Fluxus stamp! I never would have thought that: my first idea was 'that is an artistamp':-) Amazing that such a controversial type of art, unknown to even several art historic people and books, has been honoured by a stamp!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this great mail!
I thought the same thing about the stamp :)
DeleteI also thought, at first sight, that it was an artistamp.
ReplyDeleteI love that envelope with so many stamps!
It is one of those envelopes that I didn't open right away, but admired for several minutes.
DeleteI don't know about fluxus but I'm flummoxed by these Lituanian stamps. You have opened my eyes again.
ReplyDeleteOne of the great things about stamps - learning something interesting, usually.
