The theme for Sunday Stamps this week is dark, and was announced week's ago, well before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Definitely a dark week for Ukraine, for Europe, for democracy, and for the world. I can only hope that the conflict ends soon.
I thought that today I would share the beautiful Ukrainian stamps I have received through postcrossing, symbols of happier times in the past, and hopefully in the future.

ReplyDeleteI don't know where that bridge is but I hope it is left to stand.
The stamp if part of the Beauty and Greatness of Ukraine series, and features the Monument to Volodymr the Great. The bridge is Park Bridge, crossing the Dnieper river. I believe it is a pedestrian bridge, so I would imagine it is open, although hard to know if it has been damaged at all at this point.
DeleteI hope those postcrossers are safe. The bridge may not stand but the hills are eternal as is the spirit of the Ukrainian people.
ReplyDeleteI hope so, too! Ukraine currently has a little over 27,000 postcrossers. Hopefully they are safe. I imagine the postal service is severely disrupted at the moment.

ReplyDeleteThe sunflower stamp reminds me of the MH17 airplane which in 2014 was shot down above the east of Ukrain, while on its way from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. Also people from my country/city have been killed, and photos of the sunflower fields in which the airplane and the passengers' remains had landed), were on all newspapers then.
Since last Thursday, both Ukrain people and surviving relatives of the killed Dutch people demonstrated together at the MH17 monument against the present war. One of the Dutch surviving relatives told in his speech that he had to be modest: he had lost his dear ones, but he also reminded that meanwhile thousands of people in Ukraine have faced death, suffered loss in all those past years.
Such a heartbreaking situation, now, and with you also I hope that this war ends soon, in a positive way for all people.
Thanks for your comment, Heleen. We stopped by a protest against the invasion today, stayed and listened for a little bit. It was actually more of a prayer service than a protest, praying for peace and safety.
