The peseta was the currency of Spain from 1868 to 2002 when it was replaced by the euro. It had been replaced by the euro on currency exchange boards since 1999. Pesetas could be exchanged for euros until 2021. Pesetas worthh an estimated 1.7 billion euros were not exchanged.
Eva sent me two stamps featuring pesetas - a large stamp with a 1 peseta note, and a round stamp with a 1 peseta coin.

What great stamps these are!!! And a great subject for P.
ReplyDeleteI like the round design for the coin
DeleteBoth wonderfully ornate designs.
ReplyDeleteI got lucky with the light to capture the foil effect on the coin
DeleteI lived in Spain in 1969-1970, so know the peseta. I was thinking just a few days ago about pesetas in fact! Or, the cost at my school for Chupa Chups! One peseta for a regular one, two pesetas for the larger size. I think we English speakers pronounced them Chuba Chubs though.
ReplyDeleteI was a child in the 80s, and a Chupa Chups costed 5 pesetas! :DDD
DeleteGreat memory!
DeleteThese must bring back feelings of nostalgia.
ReplyDeleteIt was an interesting moment in history, all those different currencies disappearing to pave the. way for the euro
DeleteThese stamps were issued in 2014, but the note is from 1953, and the coin was issued in 1944. So I have never used them!
ReplyDeleteNice you brought these for P :)
Thanks for the extra details, I didn't have a lot of time over the weekend
DeleteStamp collecting and currency collecting all in one!
ReplyDeleteCurrency makes for an interesting stamp subject. A lot of nostalgia for older coins, I'm sure
