I have seen this stamp before, and thought it a bit odd, one of those that I have no idea what it is about. And once again, Philippe has found the perfect use for it. And once again I am amazed with the nice relationship he has with the post office because painting on a stamp would probably not be OK here in the US as they would then consider it canceled.
This stamp is part of a joint stamp issue betwenn France and Korea. Both countries habe issued two stamps at the same time with the same design. One pictures a treasure from Korea and one from France. This stamp pictures the reliquary of Pepin. It is a precious box as you can see. To ne noted that this stamp is one of the very seldom commemorative stamp issued by French post bearing tje exact face value for a letter to USA. The majority of commemorativr stamps usually bears the standard rate for France or a much highet fave value. This is one of the reason I do not use so much commemorative stamps in my mail art.
Thanks for the explanation, Eric. The only thing I thought about the stamp was that it showed some sort of ancient artifact, but I had no idea it was a joint issue.
The US rarely has more than one issue at a time for international rate. I often wish I could use British stamps as almost all of the special stamp issues have an international design.
Ooh, how much I love this envelope! Great use of the stamp (until now - in contrary to my actions as a teen - I wouldn't dare to draw and paint on stamps), and I love that horse :-)
I'm impressed. Interesting way to use this stamp !

Oh, wow! I have also received a wonderful piece of mail from him (with the same stamp, but used differently), to be uploaded soon to the blog.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see what he sent you.

ReplyDeleteIt is certainly a special envelope, although all of Philippe's mail art work is special.
