Xanthophytes on XL mail

Yes, I really did receive xanthophytes on mail art.

And the mail art was XL, as it didn't fit through the mail slot (or on the scanner). And it came with eXtra intelligent mail barcode labels - count them, they add up to half of X.

I recommend enlarging the picture of the whole envelope to appreciate the galaXy stripygoose sent me.

Remember the artistamps I showed here? The one on the envelope even got postmarked.

Well stripygoose sent me the most fantastic mail art back as a thank you - part 2 of Starling Wars!!

Here's the link to Starling Wars - The Birds Awaken she sent ages ago.

What's the largest piece of mail you ever received?

What's the coolest?

  1. I don't grasp the difference between "xantophytes" and "xerophiles" (my x-word for TFP!)... but this is a great, in all senses, piece of mail. I think the biggest mail art envelope I've got was a DIN A-4 recently sent by P. Charron. But my PO box is small, and the postal workers have no pity with mail. so i prefer small pieces! (My former postman would have never bend a mail art piece! He knocked on the door or left me a note).

    1. Xanthophytes are yellow-green algae; xerophytes are plants adapted to low-moisture environments (desert, ice, snow).

I'll remember that about your PO box.

    2. So you have received both by snail mail... :)

In the bill they always specify that I have rented a "small PO box". But, actually, all the PO boxes are the same size in that post office, and in all the post offices I've seen in Morocco. I hope one day I will see the elusive "big PO boxes"!

    3. Haha, that's great. Maybe some businesses/government agencies have big boxes?

  2. xantophytes or xerophytes - I hadn't heard of either; can't argue with these. Largest mail - boring A-4 with financial investment reoorts.

  3. What a great piece of mail art. Now that face on the lady on the other one - yikes! My maillady usually knocks on the door for large pieces but sometimes they just get shoved into the box.

    1. The eyes of many birds sometimes seem overly bright, too intent, and downright sinister to me.

I've had some items forced through the letter box (mail slot), but bigger items usually sit behind the screen door - fortunately they usually stay there until I get home.

  4. Very cool! I will have to see if I can find any xanthophytes.

I no longer receive mail except in my virtual mailbox. However, when I lived in the USA, other than packages, probably my largest was a huge photo a friend of mine sent. My postman rolled it up to fit in the slot. Glad he did not fold it.

    1. It would definitely be a different life if I didn't receive any physical mail.

  5. What a great finding, today's 'X'! And wonderful mail art. The word Starling Wars alone already caused a big smile on my face, great finding, too :-)

What super luck to get X in an XL post!

    1. Yes, I was lucky. I'm sure I could have figured something else out, but with this fab mail art I didn't need to. This is one of the first posts I wrote for A-Z.

  8. I did not know what xanthophytes were until this XL piece of art. Thank you for sharing it with us and educating us at the same time. I am not sure what the largest piece of mail I have received is. Unfortunately at least one of the mail persons who covers this route tends to fold mail that says "Do NOT Fold", which means I have certificates that have a crease. I guess for mail art it adds to the uniqueness to have those creases and such but still...

    1. For the most part I don't think the mail carriers read any of the notes on mail, even if it says please, which is a shame, particularly with your certificates. In their defense, they are on a pretty strict timeline to get their deliveries done.

  9. That is some amazing mail! The last mail I got was junk (an add for a car dealership having a sale). The most interesting came from a friend in Egypt. The envelope was closer to fabric than paper (almost like money material). The stamps were interesting. It was just really neat.
