Industry

Today's Sunday Stamps theme is industry. On this Dutch stamp celebrating Tilburg you can see a textile industry, the woman at a loom (I think, or maybe a spinning wheel), representative of Tilsburg being known as the wool capital of the Netherlands from the 1600s until its decline in the 1960s. The entertainment industry is also represented - 'Grootste kermis' is the largest summer fair held in the Netherlands, in the city of Tilburg. And from the construction industry, the building is the Stadstheer, built between 2005 and 2007. Each apartment has a cuboid sunroom that sticks out from the main structure. In Dutch they are colloquially called 'vogelkooikes' - bird cages. Tilburg is located in the southern province of North Brabant.

This stamp was issued in 2209 as part of the Mooi Nederland series (beautiful Netherlands). Thanks for the stamp, Heleen!

  1. Cool stamp. I think the woman is carding wool, getting it ready to spin into thread on the spinning wheel.

  2. What a nice stamp! Several industries on one! A sunroom would be lovely, although I am not sure about high up and jutted out in the air! I might be nervous. I have a dark house, so sunrooms do have their appeal.

  5. A nice combination of themes. I love Dutch word translations, my favourite is the one for road drains - water eaters.

  6. Me too, I believe she is carding the wool prior to spinning it in the wheel. I have got this stamp, too, but I didn't think of it for today's topic.

  7. Such an informative blog post! Thank you for sharing - and for letting me learn more about this stamp!
I didn’t know about the Stadsheer and the ‘vogelkooikes’, as I was always focused on the spinning wheel and the Tilburg fair (kermis) when looking at this stamp..
The Tilburg textile industry was very famous. And it was the reason for the (self-proclaimed) nickname for Tilburgers in carnaval time: ‘Kruikenzeikers’, ‘people who pee in a jar’. Which nowadays is considered a bad word, but it origines from the fact that textile industry employees had to take their urine in jars to work, because the ammonium in this fluid was used for processing the wool!..
