E is for España

I'm always fascinated with country names in different languages. Somehow in English the word for España is just one syllable - Spain. This stamp translates to Spain is Philately. A large stamp (57.6 x 40.9 mm) issued in 2025, I love the retro design. Thanks to Eva for sending it.

Thursday postcard hunt - north American city

It's the last city-themed week of the month, and I've chosen Nashville, Tennessee. The main feature of this postcard is the AT&T building at 333 Commerce St, also known as The Batman Building.

D is for Deporte para todos

Deporte para todos translates to sport for everyone. These two stamps, issued by Correos in 2013, feature amateur running events and bicycle touring. Eva sent them some time ago. I like the small detail of a foot and a wheel on the white border of the stamps.

Year of the Fire Horse

The Lunar New Year starts today, and it's the turn of the horse.

This stamp from Korea looks even better in person, and if you look carefully it has a special postmark.

C is for Calidad Turistica

For today's Sunday Stamps, C is for Calidad Turistica - Quality Tourism. This concept focuses on maximizing the visitor experience while promoting sustainability, responsibility, and high-standard services, moving beyond mass tourism to create meaningful, authentic, and low-impact journeys. It prioritizes quality over quantity, fostering economic, social, and environmental benefits for both tourists and local communities.

There are 5 Cs associated with this concept - culture, cuisine, community, craftsmanship, and convenience.

The stamp was issued in 2019 as part of a tourism series, and sent to me by Eva.

Thursday postcard hunt - southern European cities

Today's theme is southern European cities.

Not exactly a city, but the best I could find - a view of Efdilos on the Greek island of Ikaria sent by Eva in 2017. Sure to warm anybody up if you're still in winter :)

Eva sent me this wonderful stamp of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando (Madrid) - the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid.

Thursday postcard hunt - Asian cities

Today's postcard hunt theme is Asian cities.

I've chosen a postcard received via postcrossing that shows an Indian express intercity train, the Vande Bharat Express, that is used on routes that connect cities that are less than 500 miles (800 km) apart. The inaugural journey was on 15 February, 2019, running the New Delhi-Varanasi route, which is 472 miles (750 km). The trip takes 8 hours, with an average speed of 59 mph (95 km/h), and two intermediate stops.

Thursday postcard hunt - light or bright colors

I didn't have to hunt too far this week, as Eva recently sent me this postcard of my favorite author, Ursula K. Le Guin (1929-2018)

A couple of quotes on light:

'Light is the left hand of darkness, and darkness the right hand of light'

(The Left Hand of Darkness, 1969. Winner of both the Hugo and the Nebula Awards for best novel)

    'Only in silence the word,
    Only in dark the light,
    Only in dying life:
    Bright the hawk's flight
    On the empty sky.'

(The Creation of Éa)

Z is for złoty

Z is always a tough letter for stamps. The currency in Poland is the złoty, abbreviated zł, as seen on this pretty 2025 Christmas stamp.

Y is for yellow

The Sunday Stamps journey through the alphabet is on Y, and I feel yellow might be a popular choice. This cheerful, bright sunflower from Poland is perfect on this cold (snowy?) day in Ohio.

Thursday postcard hunt: Light - snowy scenes

Today's postcard hunt theme is snowy scenes, and I recently received this from Middelburg in the Netherlands. The sender wrote, 'It never really snows in this part of the Netherlands,  so when it does it is truly magical.'

It's still Christmas - Dragon

My first postcrossing card received this year, and it is a beautiful dragon sent from Russia.

What kind of unusual animal would you like to see on a Christmas card/postcard? Or do you prefer the traditional ones?

It's still Christmas - Chicken

More Christmas mail arriving in 2026, I love it. Eva commented that there shoud be more postcards with chickens, and then a Christmas chicken arrived in my mailbox from Carroll!

Are you still receiving Christmas mail?

It's still Christmas - Little Bear

First mail of the year from Fafa arrived in this great envelope

Christmas Winnie the Pooh, who is, delightfully, Winnie l'Ourson (little bear or cub) in French. My favorite name for the characters in French is Coco Lapin for Rabbit. Ooh, la, la!

W is for water

The theme for this week's Sunday Stamps is the letter W.

I have two beautiful stamps from France to share. The first commemorates the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference, held in Nice this year. The conference goals were to work on ocean conservation and sustainability.

The second, from Fafa, focuses on conservation of the unique biodiversity of Mediterranean nature reserves.

Postcard hunt Thursday: Light - sunshine

 Happy New Year,  everyone!

January's theme is Light, and today is sunshine. Looking through several postcards I had a lot with blue skies, and none with the sun itself.

This card from Eva is perfect, wishing everyone all the best for 2026. Hopefully the sunglasses are needed for a sunny outlook, rather than a raging dumpster fire ;)

Do you like to get away in the middle of winter to somewhere sunnier? Do you live somewhere with a lot of bright sun, even in winter?
