Lost

The theme for today's Sunday Stamps is art.

This envelope was blogged by Jean earlier this year. She mentioned that the post office wouldn't like it, and added my address to the back. I guess they didn't like that either, as this one never made it, sadly.

The stamp is from a sheet of 20 titled American Art, covering four centuries of art on the continent. It features Mark Rothko's painting titled "No. 12".

I'm a big Rothko fan, and will always go and see an exhibit - the colors are so much more intense and interesting in person than on line, on prints or postcards, on photos, and even on stamps.

For more art, head over to Sunday Stamps.

  1. it makes me sad that this one disappeared. sometimes i think there is a non-compliant postal worker who has good taste in mail art and can't help him-or-her self.

    1. Maybe... I hope that person is enjoying the mail if they exist.

  2. I agree that his work needs to be seen live (so to speak). I never appreciated his work, until I saw it at MoMA.

    1. I remember seeing some of his black on black work, that looks dull on line, which is incredible up close.

  3. What a beauty -- and how sad you never got it. The mystery of lost mail.

    1. The mail certainly seems to be full of unsolved mysteries, doesn't it?

  4. Oh, yes, it's a pity it haven't arrived (yet?). These stamps really illuminate the letters, I wouldn't mind to use them.

    1. I love these stamps, the flower included. Jean matched this pair very well. This one has been MIA for a while now - several months, so I am not hopeful.

  5. Wonderful composition, these stamps and address lines together.
So sad that it got lost in the mail (and indeed I hope it'll have a good home at some sneaky person's house instead of being destroyed by a frustrated postal machine or worker..). Maybe it will arrive one day, as Eva suggests. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

I learned about Rothko (and learned to value his art) just one year ago, and I think it great that USPS has issued this stamp.

    1. Yes, it is a bit sad as this is the type of envelope style I absolutely love. But at least we have the internet, so I can still admire it.
