They are mostly in the tree for their photo-op, although. sometimes I forget to take them out :) A couple of fun ones make. it back into the tree every year.
The tree isn't up yet. In a fit of nostalgia, I bought one of those ceramic trees popular in the 1970's. Ma had one, but I don't know what happened to hers.
I have adopted your idea of putting Christmas cards in my tree. Mostly, though, it is filled with many different bird ornaments.
